Mom’s wise advice when we were young
When reprimands were duly needed
Her own advice she always heeded
Gentle tones and kindness reached
Our hearts faster than searing speech
And once Mom told a tale of fiction
Underscored with her convictions
A boy unwanted, neglected then left
to fend for himself, honed the art of theft
An apple slipped quickly inside his shirt
Remedied the nagging of hunger’s hurt
It wasn’t long till he joined a gang
Learned their tricks, spoke their slang
Their ways were rough, the boy adapted
to the buddy rules and how they acted
But something strange was taking place
when words flew from his snarling face
A sour taste lingered in his mouth
He fleetingly thought “what’s that about”
Next day while scoping out a vendor
His threatening words caused surrender
of the vendor’s cash to his stealing hands
He bathed in the power of his demands
His untamed tongue was on its game
But nasty words soon caused him pain
Acidic spittle burned his gums
He belched out sulfur, his brain went numb
Police were called, the boy would pay
With community service for thirty days
Collecting trash from the city square
He met a girl with flaxen hair
Her words were soft, with a pleasant lilt
That imbued with hope instead of guilt
Her breathy voice had a lingering scent
That filled the air like sweetened mints
She chose her words quite carefully
Their power can trap or set one free
For this boy abandoned and betrayed
She bowed her head then kindly prayed
Words sweetened by heaven’s grace
Helped a boy rise from disgrace
They taught of One upon a tree
They spoke of love and piety
It’s what we speak into the ears
That make impressions through the years
Consider each word upon the tongue
Check for sweetness before they’re flung
Proverbs 16:24 (NLT) Kind words are like honey--sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.
