Lizzy stared out the window of her hospital room and sighed. "Why can't I go outside Momma?"

"Because the medicine the doctors are giving you make you get sick easily. We don't want you to go outside and get sick."

"But I already feel sick. I thought medicine was supposed to make you feel good, not icky."

Lizzy's mom smiled a bit. "Well, the medicine is making you better."

"Then why do I feel icky? I hate cancer."

"Me too, honey. Me too."

Lizzy's lip jutted out, as she tired to fold her arms, but her IV lines only got in the way. "I wanna go on a picnic, but I can't because of this stupid cancer."

"A picnic, huh? Hold on, Honey. I'll be right back, okay?"

A few minutes later, Lizzy's mom returned. "What do you think about having a picnic right here in the hospital?"

Lizzy cocked her head to the side. "How do we do that?"

Her mom sat on the window seat and gathered Lizzy into her arms. "Well, I just talked to the nurses. They said you can have a picnic in the playroom, and you can invite some of the other kids too."

"I can? Can I make invitations?"

"Of course."

Lizzy hopped up and dragged her IV pole behind her, with her mom's help. She walked over to the playroom and sat down with some paper and markers "Can we have a wagon parade too?"

"I don't see why not."

After Lizzy finished, she climbed into a red wagon. He mom pulled, while Lizzy held the IV pole.

As Lizzy rode around, she handed the children her invitations. "Come to my picnic and wagon parade."

Her mom added the details. "We'll meet in the play room in about fifteen minutes."

After the deliveries were made, Lizzy sat down on the giant blanket and watched as the other children and parents gathered in the playroom. A nature sounds CD played in the background. Lizzy looked up at her favorite nurse, as she handed her a special treat. "Thank you!"

When they finished eating, Lizzy handed each child a small rhythm instrument. She saved the cymbals for herself. Those were her favorite. The younger children sat in wagons while the older ones walked.

With Lizzy as the Grand Marshall, they marched around the floor, stopping outside the doors of all the children who were too sick to leave their rooms. Doctors, nurses, and parents stood in the hallway smiling and clapping as they made their way around.

Back in her room, Lizzy looked out the window once again. "Even though it wasn't outside, that was still a fun picnic." She looked around the room at all the stuffed animals her friends and family had given her. "Mom, can we have an indoor picnic again? "'Cept next time, I want it in my room. Just me and Teddy, and Ruffles, and Pinky, and Floppy, and Snuggles, and..."
