“That was my reaction too, but it is!”
“Look at those birds in the yard, do you think they know?”
“I don’t know.”
“Every year, when I saw the birds migrating to a warmer climate, I would think of her. Do you think maybe she just took off again; she was always flighty, chasing sunny dreams, like a bird.”
“No, all of her things are here.”
“You know, when she moved, I was so angry she was leaving, I resented her for it. She had been my best friend since childhood, yet her dreams of oceans, beaches and sunshine seemed more important than friendship. I really needed her, just getting over my divorce, but still she left. She was always chasing fairy tales and then when she got here and began writing me of the biggest fairy tale of all, I barely spoke to her.”
“She said she felt led, drawn, to move here, deep in her soul - she just had to. She hated leaving you. She told me she met someone on the beach here that handed her a bible and a tract. She said it led her to salvation. She said she began then, witnessing to you. She talked about you a lot, telling me tales of her and her best friend Layla. So it is finally good to meet you Layla!”
“Well, she mentioned in one of her letters that she had a wonderful neighbor named Kate that shared her love of gardening. I should have realized your friendship to her probably replaced mine.”
“No Layla, it never did, but you shut her out.”
“Maybe I did, but I couldn’t handle her increasing craziness. It was always, the bible this, the bible says that, I stopped even taking her phone calls! I had written her one day about finding a few gray hairs on my head and that it depressed me because I still had so much I wanted to accomplish! The next week, I received the fanciest wrapped package in the mail from her and when I opened it, it was L'Oreal hair dye with a think young tag. I laughed so hard and was going to call her, but before I did I opened the box of dye and out came one of those stupid tracts she’d inserted inside! I was so angry I threw it all in the garbage!”
“I think that was your mistake and not hers and I think you know it, otherwise why are you here?”
“Maybe you’re right but tell me, why are YOU here!”
“Because Layla, like you, I didn’t listen to her warnings and I was left too.”
“That still sounds insane! There has to be another explanation for all this craziness going on!”
“No, Layla, you know it and I know it! All she tried to tell us was not a fairy tale! She had the truth and loved us enough to try and warn us! I didn’t get angry about her warnings like you did, but I brushed them off, ignored them, which was just as bad. I thought I was good enough, maybe better than most people out there and that living a good life was all that mattered!”
“If that’s true Kate, what do I do - WE do now? I drove here for answers! Now she’s gone and I feel an emptiness worse than when she moved!”
“Here, I found two letters she left, one for each of us, titled In Case Of The Rapture PLEASE Read. I read mine and have now given my heart to God. If only I had done it sooner – but she cared enough to leave us information Layla!”
“I’m so scared Kate, if all that stuff is true…”
“It is true Layla! It has happened! The horrible truth is our mutual friend loved us, tried to warn us, but we wouldn’t listen, so now we have to walk through hell first! But we can still make it to Heaven, Layla! Please kneel here with me; let’s talk to Jesus - her dearest friend of all that she tried so hard to share with us! He will be our friend now too and strengthen us to face what we now MUST face!”
“I’m so scared! Will you help me Kate, PLEASE - and stay with me?”
“Oh yes Layla, YES! Let’s pray! We need each other and we WILL finish this together! She wouldn’t have wanted it any other way!”

I like how you concluded on a positive note with both friends coming to Christ because of the witness by a mutual friend.
