“Thanks for having me here, Joe.”
“So, Lt. Baum; what do you say to those who insist your client is guilty of murdering those two unfortunate women?”
“First of all, those ladies were hardly unfortunate. They’ve both been up to no good for years. Every citizen in that area was at their mercy.”
“But, surely, Lt. Baum – no matter how nefarious these ladies may have been – your client had no right to take the law into her own hand. She was seen at the time of both of the sisters’ deaths and there can be no question she wielded the murder weapon that took the life of the second sister.”
“No matter how it looks, she can hardly be blamed for the first sister’s death.”
“But, lieutenant: some say they saw her “get the drop” on that woman.”
“Poppycock, Joe. It was an act of nature. That woman died as a result of that terrible storm that swept through the town. My client had no part in what happened to her”
“Perhaps not, Lt. Baum - but even you admit your client was the one who used the weapon which killed the second sister. And when you put that together with her being at the scene of the first sister’s death…”
“Joe, I can’t believe you fell for that story, too. Yes, Miss Gale did throw the bucket at that woman, but she did it to save her friend’s life. And she had no way of knowing the woman had such an incredible sensitivity to water. How could she?”
“Lt. Baum, many people are saying your case got a real boost from your client’s character witnesses.”
“Well, I suppose Mr. Mann was a bit sentimental; it was easy to see he spoke from the heart. As for Mr. Crow, it everyone said it looked as though he’d thought a lot about what he said. And Mr. Lyon was as brave a witness as anyone could want; he came right out and called my client a “heroine.” It was very touching.”
“And what about those who have commented on the hasty exit of the town’s leading official? Without his testimony, the jury had very little to consider; when it came time for a verdict.”
“Well, I believe we’ll all soon be seeing that gentleman in high places, Joe.”
“We’ll look forward to it. So: what’s next for your client?”
“Well, Dorothy is considering several offers to appear on talk shows, but for now she and her little dog have headed over the rainbow, to Kansas. And I think we’ll find her story has a happy ending, after all.”
“Thanks very much, Lt. Baum. Join me for our next episode, when I interview the notorious kissing bandit, Georgie Porgie. Don’t miss it!”
