Today
It was on my face when
I left home this morning
I saw it reflected in the shop window
When I ran my fingers
Through my hair
I had it when I
Climbed on the bus
It wasn’t tucked away
In my back pocket
Like my bus ticket
Reserved for only a
Select few to see
I had it when I
Walked through the school gates
Unlike others I don’t
Put away my smile
And drag out a scowl
Pretending I hate school
Stifling enthusiasm, scraping by
I lost my smile
At precisely 8.55 am
In assembly
In the half light of
A slide presentation
Too many images of
Things that should never be
I felt my smile slip
When I saw the picture
Of a boy sitting on a bed
Every bone visible
Arms and legs stripped of
Fat and muscle
Eyes stripped of hope
My smile disappeared
Replaced by the urge to weep
Things that should never be
Are allowed to be
We blame God
And pardon ourselves
And injustice struts unchallenged
I lost my smile
Today
But
I found my heart
Not as cold and hard
As I imagined
It began to beat
