“Keep walking!”
A man on the road
Bone-broke and battered
Blood seeps
Flies dance
But compassion rises
The heart decides
To stop
Reason says
“It’s a trap”
Behind the boulders
Concealed in the shadows
Bandits wait
Brigands lurk
But courage rises
The heart decides
To stay
Reason says
“Not one of us!”
The body bears the stamp
The colour and cut of difference
Foreign face
Foreign faith
But tenderness rises
The heart decides
To help
Reason says
“Only enough and no more!”
The things that I would have traded
My meagre living
Thick oil
Rich wine
I ought to ration not lavishly spill
But generosity rises
The heart decides
To give
Reason says
“What’s in it for me?”
Purse emptied and a promise of more to come
I leave without applause or autographs
No forwarding address
No backward glance
But contentment rises
The heart decides
To love
Reason says
“Not worth it.”
The rebellious human race on the road
Bone-broke and battered
Enemy of God
Wrath deserving
But salvation rises
God’s heart decides
To rescue
