They were there for the taking,
but I let them slip through my fingers,
falling to the floor,
littering my past with un-lived moments.
how sad,
for I left them before I ever knew them.
Years are seldom lost,
for they are time enough to know sorrows and joys and other well-noticed matters.
Seconds are seldom missed,
they are but breaths taken in and out,
tiny stitches that hold together the cloth across which we travel.
Some months are poorly lived and days are often squandered,
but minutes,
they are time enough to hold a stretch of living--
a thought can be conceived, a line of verse be written,
a word good-bye,
a wave hello,
a passing cloud, a rising breeze,
a sprint through a sudden summer shower,
a robin's song from an apple tree
and a wolf's howl from across the smoky valley.
A minute is just enough,
just enough for the stuff of life to be.
Yet, so many minutes I have lost,
empty spaces
in my eternity.
