On Monday I woke with cramping pains. I hoped they would go away, but they just got worse through the day. I had forgotten my labor pains from Jenna’s birth two years before, and chasing a toddler while doing my normal housework distracted me from the severity of the pain. When Abe called to check on me, I casually mentioned the cramping.
He rushed home immediately. In twenty minutes we were checking into the emergency room.
We can’t do anything about it. Don’t they realize how heartless those words are? Mary, you’re not even halfway through your pregnancy. Your baby is not viable.
Not viable? I feel him kicking every day. He’s alive.
He’s not going to live.
A maternity nurse caught wind of our situation, and asked if we would like to come up to the birth center. We were still shaking, in shock, so we agreed.
They put a teardrop sign on the door, and kept us in a room far away from the rest of the patients. The doctor let them give me pain medication.
And the nurse cried with us.
At 2:27am, he came. Suddenly, without any warning. The nurse scooped him up and dried him off; handed him to me. I didn’t think I would want to, but my mother’s instinct drove me to hold him, to cling to the few moments we had together.
Matthew James, we named him.
They gave us footprints, handprints, pictures, tiny blankets, stuffed animals. We held him as long as we could, and cried. So many tears.
Just this week.
Just last week.
Last year?
But Adam is five years old, and he was born the next year after Matty.
I often do wonder how the years can seem like days. It was just this week; I’m sure of it. I will never forget.
It’s Wednesday, and my baby was born just yesterday.
