What’s the problem? Well, You only have one man selected for the job: a guy named Moses – and I can’t hire him. Moses has a real anger management problem, a questionable national origin, and a speech impediment. Surely; we can’t have a man like that doing such an important job. Oh… he’s the one You chose? Well, if You say so….

Hello, God? It’s Earth Lee Wisdom again. I have another predicament. You know Israel needs a new king. Saul was a good looking young soldier and he was popular when the people chose him, but he isn’t getting the job done. So, we need a new king and You seem to have written down the wrong name for this job. David? The youngest son of Jesse? You want him – not one of his brothers? You want a psalm-writing shepherd to be King? I know he did a great job with that lucky shot to kill Goliath, but most people around here agree; that must have been fixed. Well, OK…You must see something in Him; if You call him “a man after God’s own heart”….

Hello, God? Earth Lee Wisdom, checking in. I haven’t questioned Your choices for centuries, but this one can’t be right. We need a man who can carry the Good News to the Jews and to the uttermost parts of the earth. Well, yes, You did make a decision– but he can’t be the right man. After all, Saul of Tarsus is a sanctimonious zealot and tentmaker – and he’s personally responsible for the deaths of countless of Your followers. I hear he’s changed his name to Paul and changed his heart to serve You; but how can You think he’ll be accepted by the believers whose families he’s persecuted? Well, after all – it is up to You.
It seems as if Your way of selecting workers is far different than mine. If I look at this through my own eyes, it seems as though You always chose unqualified people to do Your Will. But then, when all was said and done, it all came out right. I just don’t understand.
But, then again… if it were my choice, I’d never sacrifice the life of my only son for men and women who don’t deserve that sacrifice. Yet, You let Your Son become sin for us – in order to give everyone Your free gift of eternal life.
So, I guess I'm glad You're the One Who does the choosing. That way, anyone who trusts in You has a chance to do Your will.
But You knew that all along, didn't You?
