across a cerulean sky
air fresh and crisp
cleanses away the remnants
of summer’s stifling heat.
The landscape an artist’s palette
ablaze with color
yellows melt into gold while
titian and umber flicker among
orange and scarlet flames.
Trees decked out in their finest apparel,
like Cinderella,
slowly shed their lustrous gowns
as they leave the ball.
Fat-cheeked chipmunks and
industrious squirrels
diligently gather
a treasure-trove of nuts while
birds ,vying for a place at my feeder,
gorge on seeds and suet
preparing themselves for long
winter nights or long winter flights.
Apples, crisp and rosy,
ripe and ready
for butter, cider, and pies
golden-green pears
their sweet juiciness
drips down hands and chins
roly-poly pumpkins,
globes of glowing orange
scattered in the field,
wait for trick-or-treat.
Squeals of laughter erupt from
carefully raked
mounds of crackling brown
spice-scented leaves
tossed in the air
crunched underfoot.
Bare branches form
graceful statues while
silver frosting covers
grass and rooftops.
Days grow shorter
nights grow longer in
Earth’s final celebration
before winter’s long sleep.
