TITLE: The Monster under the Bed | Previous Challenge Entry

Lynn climbed through a fog of deep sleep to see four-year-old Michael standing by her bed. The moonlight filtered through the blinds to turn his blond hair into a golden crown and the tears on his cheeks into crystal drops.
Lynn turned to her husband to see if he was awake before she remembered that Jim was out of town. It was up to her to calm Michael’s fears. She swung her legs over the edge of the bed and lifted him up to sit on her lap. “Now,” she said, “tell me why you’re scared.”
“It’s dark in my room,” sobbed Michael.
“I thought you weren’t afraid of the dark any more since you’re a big boy,” said Lynn. “Why are you frightened tonight?”
“But Mommy, it’s not just dark; there’s a monster under my bed.”
“Now, Son, you know your dad and I have told you before that we don’t have any monsters in our house. Let’s go to your room. I’ll turn the light on to show you that there is no monster and to tuck you into bed again.”
“But Mommy, this time I’m sure he’s there. I can hear him growling.”
With a longsuffering sigh, Lynn stood up, and little bare feet padded beside bigger bare feet to Michael’s room. Turning on the light, she said, “Looks clear here to me.”
“But Mommy, you haven’t looked under the bed yet,” came a quivering voice.
Lynn sat on Michael’s bed and took him on her lap again. “Michael, do you remember how we’ve told you that Jesus is always with you, whether it’s dark or light, and you have no reason to be afraid?”
“Yes, Mommy, but Jesus is in my heart, not under my bed.”
“Okay, Michael, let’s get on our knees and look, and I’ll prove to you there’s no monster there.”
Lynn lifted the corner of the spread, sending plastic cowboys tumbling to the floor. Before they could peer together under the lifted spread, Mr. Peepers, the neighbor’s big tomcat, crawled out, and after arching his back in a deep stretch with his tail a tall banner behind him, he strutted out of the room.
“I’ve got to make sure that back door stays closed,” muttered Lynn as she went to let Mr. Peepers out.
