The words they might not say
And yet the way they stand and stare
So much their looks convey
They’ve slapped a label on my life
That says that I am bad
They never glimpse the soul within
Just count the men I’ve had
I stand within this hostile crowd
The stones grasped in their hands
I realise, I’m on my own
That no one understands
A widow, with no means to pay
With children still to feed
No man to offer to protect
Provide all that we need
What other road, what other path
Was opened up to me?
How can they watch, and judge me when
They’ve such security?
The elders gather round a man
A question they would pose
Caught in the act, my guilt is sure
My death, would he oppose?
I’ve seen the greedy eyes of men
Alive with leering lust
Another man, another gaze
But His? Without disgust
I stand exposed, I cannot hide
The “bad” in me He sees
Discards the label others write
My captive spirit frees
A challenge for the “pure and good”
If sinless they would be
He gives the right to throw their stones
The power to punish me
One by one they drop their stones
Their faces flush with shame
A guiltless life? Perfect? Pure?
A goodness none can claim
Where are the ones that would accuse?
There’s no one that remains
Before a silent man I stand
Clothed in my guilty stains
“If others won’t, then nor will I
Condemn you, precious child.
Go in peace and sin no more.”
Hope bursts, intense and wild
A second cherished chance is mine
Another path to tread
My tainted life I leave behind
And follow Him instead
