What I Did On My Summer Vacation by Molly Atkins

This summer our family went to Canada for our vacation. We always go camping every summer and one week we go to Syracuse and then we go someplace else. I like it when we go to Syracuse because then we get to see Grandma Hazel and Grandpa Bob. But this year Grandma and Grandpa were at some Salvation Army thing so we spent two weeks in Canada.

Canada is in another country. It’s right next to the United States so I don’t understand how it can be another country but it sure is. We had to stop at this wooden building on the way back and sit in line for a whole hour and nobody even cared that I had to go to the bathroom the whole time we were in that stupid line. My brother Randy kept teasing me I should go find a bush but there were people watching, for Pete’s sake. Dad said the building was called Customers or something but they sure didn’t treat us like customers. They looked at Dad and Mom’s drivers licenses and asked if we were taking any fruit back with us and stuff like that. I don’t get how they can make you sit in a line of cars to ask if you are taking fruit back home; I didn’t think their fruit was so much better than ours.

Well, anyway the first place in Canada we went to was Montreal. They mostly speak French there and it looked like a nice place. I don’t remember much except it was hard to read the signs. The only French words I know are “Oooh, la la!” and “Oui” and the words from the card game Mille Bournes. They weren’t any help because thank God our car didn’t get a flat and we weren’t in an accident.

So then we went to Ottawa. That’s their capitol like Washington D.C. is our capitol. It’s pretty cool except instead of Secret Service guys they have these guys called Mounties. They wear these tall furry hats and stand really still in front of their main building. I heard Mounties have to be really serious and can’t smile. My little sister Callie made all kind of funny faces to try to get one of the Mounties to smile but he didn’t. That must be a really hard job if you can’t smile. My Dad says he doesn’t smile much at his job either but I don’t think it’s the same thing.

Ottawa is in a province called Ontario. Provinces are like states. There are other parts of Ontario and we went camping in one of them. Let me tell you, if there was a prize for biggest mosquitoes, that camping place would win. They were bigger than the hummingbirds in Grandma’s garden. They really liked to swoop up and bite you and I can’t believe how many of them there were. Maybe they’re a special Canada mosquito or something like that.

The funniest part of camping in Ontario was one night when we put up our tent and got inside just before it started raining. Rain doesn’t go through a tent unless you touch the canvas part so we weren’t worried even though the rain was really loud on the tent. We went to sleep in the middle of that really loud storm and when we woke up and looked outside the tent, we were in a whole other place than where we’d put the tent, in the first place! The rain had pushed our tent all the way down the hill! It was pretty weird. We had to dry the tent out for two whole days and stay in a motel while it dried. Dad got upset and said we blew the budget but I was glad we stayed at the motel because they had a TV.

I can’t remember much else about my summer vacation but it was OK. I missed seeing Grandma and Grandpa and hope we go back to Syracuse next year. I wonder if those Mounties are allowed to smile on their days off. I sure hope so.
