"I have made my decision. As you all know, the star chosen for this task will need knowledge to know how to navigate the sky, personality to shine brightly, and discretion to know when to stay hidden. You will be a gift to the men who follow you, and you will be a gift to the Son. You will also receive a gift, when you set your gaze upon the Child. This star will be special, and I will give you special privileges and abilities if you are chosen."
Ara squirmed in his seat. He had personality, but sometimes that presented a problem. He wasn't very good at knowing when to stop entertaining.
"I've chosen Ara to be the Guiding Star."
Ara's eyes widened. "Me? But.. but..."
The Teacher chuckled. I know what you're thinking, Ara. I'll help you. You really are the best one for the job. Congratulations."

Is it time, Master? Can I go? Huh? Can I?
The Teacher chuckled. "Calm down, just a bit. Come here. You can watch with Me."
A haunting, yet heavenly cry pierced the dark night.
"Now," He whispered, sending Ara on his mission.

The men pointed up to the sky, then went back inside to consult their star charts.
"He's right. It's not on here. That means..."
"Let's go."
****
Ara smiled. "Yes, they see me now." He moved through the vast universe, using his friends and former classmates to help guide him, while keeping an eye on the earth below. Soon others began to notice him, and he quickly sought refuge under the cover of clouds; or rather, the clouds moved to shelter him.
Ara laughed. "Hey, that's pretty cool, Teacher. I never would have thought you'd use clouds to shelter me."
"I have a few more tricks up My sleeve, He replied with a wink."
****
"Where did it go?"
"I don't know. It was right there. Let's ask Herod. Maybe he'll know."
****
The clouds parted, and Ara shone brightly once again. The men looked up and pointed, as Ara twinkled down at them.
"You're almost there," Teacher encouraged him. "Do you see it?"
He looked down and saw the house. "Yes. Should I go?"
"Yes. It's time."
Ara settled in his final resting place. He grinned as he looked at the gift below him. It was such an honor to lead these men to the Christ Child. Ara felt that he was getting just as big a gift as he was giving, as the men laid their eyes on the Savior, bending low in reverence.
"I love you, Little One," Ara whispered, as, with one final burst of light, he faded into the night sky, never to be seen again.

Author's Note:
Ara is the name of a constellation, which means "the altar."
