She stood on the precipice of that great divide. “No!” The scream ripped from her throat but not even an echo responded back. Fear gripped her heart, but she didn’t recognize it. She’d never been afraid before. Her eyes scoured the distance across the chasm, looking for something, anything. Someone. Him. Had he survived? He must be on the other side. Was there still another side? She continued to search the empty space, squinting in concentration, all her energy focused in finding something out there.
Her heart pounded. Did she see some light? Far off in the distance, a small glow, like the sun when it just begins to push it’s way through dark clouds. It grew brighter until finally she could see the other side. It seemed to move closer to her and finally she could see it clearly. It looked as it always had, beautiful, bright and colorful. Without thinking she moved towards it, touching the very edge of the precipice. She stepped one foot out but could not move forward. The blackness pressed against her, forcing her back.
She screamed his name. She saw him then, standing on the edge across from her. He called back, “I’m here. Come over to me.”
“I can’t! I tried, but something is holding me back. Come over to me. There is a way for you to come here. Don’t leave me alone. Please come to me,” she begged him.
He deliberated, looking confused, uncertain. “How can I cross over to you? There is no bridge. I don’t want to leave you there alone in that darkness, but I don’t see a way.”
“I know how to bridge the gap. You can come over to me.”
“Then make the bridge and come over to this side, to me. It is still beautiful here,” he pled with her.
Why didn’t he understand? “I cannot come over there,” she told him adamantly. “Listen to me. I have searched. There is no bridge from here to there, but there is a way for you to cross over to this side. Will you come over if I show you the bridge?”
He paused again, pondering her words, “But there is no bridge back you said. We have to stay there if I cross over?” It was a question but a realization also. “I can’t bring you back here. I can’t come back here.” He understood. His heart was heavy, his voice quiet and dull, “EVER.”
“There is no way,” she affirmed his fear. “But we will be together here. It will be alright when we are together. Don’t leave me here alone. It’s dark and I am afraid.”
She held out her hand to him. Somehow it stretched halfway across the chasm. “Take this, it will make the bridge.” She opened her hand and he reached the rest of the way across and took what she held. In an instant he was there with her, the juice still wet on his lips.
They embraced in the darkness. He experienced fear and aloneness for the first time. Although they were together they were for the first time ever, truly alone, separated from all they knew and loved. They looked back across the chasm. They could not see the other side now, but they knew it was there.
And He was there. A glimmer of hope touched their hearts. They saw it reflected in each others eyes. He was still there! Could He make a bridge to cross this great chasm? A bridge that would go from here to there? A way they could cross back over to Him?
Their eyes dropped to the ground. Why would He?

Why would He, indeed? But He did!
