"Oh, come on. It wasn't that bad," Stephanie tried to reassure her.
"Oh, and I suspect you know how it feels to make a complete and utter fool out of yourself in front of the one man on campus who's not a doofus?"
Stephanie laughed. "I can think of at least one more guy who's not a doofus."
Karen though for a second. "Okay, so he may not be the only guy who's not a doofus. But I think he may be the only Christian non-doofus."
Stephanie considered the statement. "Ok, you may have a point there. But I'm sure you haven't completely blown your chances with him. Give him another shot."
"Yeah, if he'll give me another shot."
"Oh, come on. He wasn't laughing at you. He was laughing with you, Karen."
"There's a slight flaw in that logic, Stephanie. I wasn't laughing. I can see the headline in the paper now. 'OCNDOC Saves Girl From Sudden Death.'"
"Um... OCNDOC?"
"'Only Christian Non-Doofus On Campus,' of course. How would you say that anyway? 'Ocean doc?'"
"Karen, I think you may have hit your head a bit harder than we thought. Perhaps I should take you to the ER."
Karen hit Stephanie with her pillow. "Stop it! I'm trying to be serious here. How am I going to face him again?"
Stephanie shrugged her shoulders. "I don't know. How about saying 'Hi. Thanks for saving me from the speeding bus. But next time we encounter one, let's make sure we're both inside of it.'"
"Oh yeah. That'll win me big points."
"Well, it would show you're not afraid to laugh at yourself."
"Forget it, Stephanie. Just tell me I'm right. Just tell me I blew it and I'll never have a chance with him again. You know it's the truth."
"For the last time, Karen, stop fretting over it and pick yourself up and dust yourself off. He likes you and one little moment of clumsiness isn't going to change that."
"That's what you think. I'm through. In fact... " The phone range, interrupting her thoughts. "You answer it, Stephanie."
"Hello? Oh, hi Ocean Doc...." Karen's eyes grew wide as she lunged for the phone, smothering Stephanie with the pillow as she leaped across the bed.
"Hello?"
Stephanie collapsed on the floor in a heap, laughing. "I thought you'd given up."
Karen spoke into the receiver. "Just a second." Turning to Stephanie she said, "Hey, if God give second chances, who am I to turn Him down?" She turned her attention back to the phone. "Oh, that?" she asked, her face growing red. "It stands for OCNDOC. Only Christian Non-Doofus on Campus. Hey, you want to meet up again? Except this time, let's make it inside the bus.
"Really? Friday night sounds great. See you then, Ocean Doc."
