His gaze upon a young and sturdy lad
With just one stone Goliath was defeated
So why, we ask, was King Saul not so glad?
The boy so young was confident that God’s love
For Israel, His dear people never waned
But Saul had quivered from the giant’s challenge
Such knowledge, such humiliation, pained
Saul’s confidence was in his mighty stature
His head and shoulders taller than the rest
His size and standing counted but for nothing
When faced with an entirely different test
How did he as a ruler trust that God would
Stand with him, bring him always victory?
What if the moment came and God was absent?
What kind of vict’ry then could Israel see?
This boy, a shepherd, fresh from peaceful pastures
Oh yes, he’d victories over fearsome bears
But when the crown lays heavy on his forehead
What will he do when crushed by Israel’s cares?
The answer came, so swift, a revelation
His confidence would be in God alone
In battles he’d not often be defeated
Because he’d kneel beneath God’s mighty throne
The final scenes played out in Saul’s long kingship
His lonely death was on the battle field
He’d turned away from making God his refuge
His fortress, or his hiding place, his shield
We choose to follow Saul or follow David
We choose to live in vict’ry or defeat
We choose to turn from God, become the stranger
Or choose to yield before the mercy seat
