Was burning inside
That the people of God
Were unable to hide
With spirits ignited
And hearts that were stirred
They called out to Ezra
“Please, read us His Word”
All who were able
The young and the old
Silently stood as
God’s story was told
The words pure and lucid
As bold Erza read
Filled each of the hearers
With a terrible dread
How far they had wandered
Off God’s holy path
For sure they were living
So close to his wrath
The Book like a sword
Cut straight to the heart
The words Ezra read
Were painful and sharp
Their heads dropped in sorrow
And tears were shed
Sad, mournful weeping
Among the crowd spread
Would God forgive them
Their adulterous ways?
Or abandon His people
For the rest of their days?
No longer His treasure?
His jewels? His crown?
But torn from His head
And cast to the ground?
“Don’t weep,” Ezra shouted
“On this sacred day
God knows you’ve repented
Your guilt’s put away
“With jubilant dancing
And triumphant song
Celebrate with joy that
To Him you belong”
The feast on the table
Choice food and good wine
Comes with His promise
“Forever, you’re mine!”
