“… and please bless the doctors and nurses, Father. May their hands be skillful and their minds clear as they provide surgery and care for the children who are sick. In Jesus name we pray.”
When they finished, he pushed the screen aside.
“Hi Yolanda. Mr. and Mrs. Manning. I’m Dr. Billings. I’m here in place of Dr. Jamison who had emergency surgery on his appendix and won’t be able to do your operation tomorrow.”
They talked for a few minutes and Maggie, the nurse who had been changing the young girl’s IV, left while they continued to discuss Yolanda’s heart repair.
Maggie went next door.
“How are you doing, William? Are you ready for your new heart tomorrow?”
“I guess so. I just worry about whose heart it will be and I feel sad about them losing theirs.”
“I understand.” said Maggie. “You know, God has a way of fixing these kind of things. Do you believe in God, William?”
“Sort of. Yolanda has talked with me about Him, but I’m not sure I believe everything she’s told me.”
“Well, you know what I’m going to do if it’s all right with you? I’m going to pray for you to have peace in your heart. Would that be okay?”
“Sure.”
Maggie prayed for him and then went back to her duties. She always prayed for the children to be saved, one way or the other.
After she left, William’s parents arrived.
“Guess what? The nurse just prayed for me to get well. Do you think God will listen?”
His parents exchanged looks.
“You know, son, we do think that God heard her prayer. We’ve never talked with you about God, but when we were children, we learned all about Him and His Son, Jesus. Would you like to hear some of the stories?” …
Later that afternoon, Maggie and Dr. Billings were reviewing the charts of those patients who were having surgery the next day.
“Maggie, do you ever pray with the children?”
Her head shot up and she hesitated before responding. “Well - yes. I often pray with the kids and their families if they ask me. But why do you ask? I didn’t think you were a Christian.”
“You’re right. But lately, I’ve noticed that those who pray seem to have quicker recoveries. And this morning, I overheard Yolanda and her parents praying for us. Not just for her.”
“I pray for us as well, Dr. Billings, because I believe we are all in God’s hands and are here for His purpose. And, it’s okay if you have doubts, many believers feel the same way at different times in their lives. The important thing is that we trust that He is in control and that He is real. I would be happy to pray for you if you like?”
Joe stared at Maggie unable to speak for a couple of minutes. She waited patiently.
“That would be nice, Maggie. I’ve been having some issues with my confidence the last couple of months, and I’ve been worried about being able to do my best for these kids. When I see them bow their heads and hold hands with their families, I feel like I’m missing something important. I want to know what they are experiencing, and I need to believe in someone beside myself.” …
Two days later, Joe was talking with a colleague, Sam. “I heard you had some problems with the transplant patient, yesterday. How’s the boy doing?”
“Fine right now. It was odd, though. I thought we had lost him when we couldn’t get the new heart to restart, until a bright light flashed over William’s body the moment his new heart started beating - and I wasn’t the only one who saw it. Maggie was assisting and when I looked at her, she just closed her eyes like she was praying or something.”
Joe smiled to himself. You know what, Sam? Maggie is a Christian, and she told me that she prayed with that little boy before his surgery. Now, I’m just new at this believing stuff myself, but … “
