She stepped outside. The night’s darkness would soon yield to dawn. Wyndlin closed her eyes and sang a melody of beckoning.
The gift of song is her strongest. Her name from the language of the ancients means ‘Singer of the Soul’. It is a healing gift of the spirit and also the flesh. She discovered at an early age it worked for most creatures as well as people.
Someone in Forest East was hurting. The weakened spirit had the characteristics of a person, but different somehow from any she had thus encountered. This intrigued her, triggering more than the usual eagerness to use her gifts.
Warhk, mightiest of the giant eagles from the nearby Hydrand Cliffs arrived swiftly and silently.
“Warhk my friend.” She gently stroked his soft feathered head. “An injured soul calls out. I must reach Forest East quickly. Will you help me?”
The magnificent bird bowed beak to soil and Wyndlin mounted his sturdy neck lying flat against his silky plumage. She clutched deep for a solid hold.
“Fly.” She whispered. Into the starglow of the night sky they flew on wings powerful as a great waterfall.
They reached the tree line just before dawn. Waiting in answer to her in-flight song was Shymn of the Forest East Mihnra, largest and swiftest breed of forest cats.
She thanked the great bird and climbed upon the Mihnra cat, again taking a strong grip.
Shymn knew the woods well and they soon arrived at a small clearing within the forest walls. Morning mist hovered thick just below the tree tops concealing curious eyes of forest dwellers.
A golden metal ship, the likes of which she had not seen nor heard, lay crumpled in a small glade of marshy fronds.
The injured life-force beckoned from within the orb.
Marsh lizards scurried about as she waded in and examined the craft. She called out, but no answer came. She commenced an amity melody.
“Hello. Is some there? I need help, please.” A male voice called faintly from within.
She did not recognize the tongue, but interpreted the meaning through her spirit. A round doorway appeared with a hiss.
Wyndlin sensed no danger, but climbed cautiously through the open portal after instructing the cat to stand guard.
As her eyes adjusted to the dimness she saw no one and called out a greeting.
“Down here.”
More strange words, but again she understood and descended through another opening.
“Thank God. My leg is pinned beneath this truss. Can you…” Then he saw the petite young woman. “Can you get help- a man- to lift this from my leg? Do you understand?” He asked gently.
She stared questioningly then approached the stranger and placed a hand on each side of his head. She began a tune of understanding.
His mind was instantly filled with confusion which quickly passed as she ceased her singing.
“I am Wyndlin, singer of healing melodies.” She lowered her head slightly.
He could now understand her words.
“I… am Paul… Carlton. Reverend Carlton. ‘Evangelist to the stars’, so my identity certificate states.” He winced in pain.
Wyndlin lifted the beam with little effort as the stranger crawled free.
“I am from… a planet named Earth. I bring the good news about the creator of all planets and all people to inhabited worlds that have not heard. My… ship… malfunctioned and I landed here- wherever here is.” He suddenly noticed her charming radiance.
After she sang healing to his wounds he proceeded with his story of God and the world from which he came.
“Such a sad story, that God should suffer so because of His people’s disobedience. It is difficult for me to imagine a world where God is not worshipped by all. Everyone knows, loves and obeys God here. He is Sovereign King over all lands and people. The tempter may appear occasionally, but does not linger. No one welcomes him.”
Wyndlin rested. Applying the gifts to such measure produced fatigue. She watched silently as the handsome foreigner limped to and fro making a frantic, but futile, attempt to revive the ships communications device.
It would be some days before his wounds completely healed.
He was not so different from her people.
She wondered if he might eventually become fond of her world.
