“How could I not?” I responded as a motorcycle zoomed by us.
“No, that’s not what I meant,” he said. “Something just rattled somewhere under the hood of the car.”
Then I heard it, and I was concerned about what we would do since we were so far from home. As we were discussing where we could take the car to have someone check out the problem, I felt a little hand tap me on the shoulder.
“Look, Mom and Dad, it’s going to be okay. I found something to fix it with,” and our young son held up a can of motor oil that he had found on the floor in front of the backseat. (Did I mention this was not a new car?)
We thanked him for his help and stopped at a service station, where a mechanic found and fixed the minor problem that was causing the rattle.
In considering how earnest our little boy was in believing he had found just what we needed to solve our problem, I thought about the many people today who are seeking something to take care of the “rattle” in their souls. They search for solutions in many different ways: performing good deeds, participating in or viewing sports activities, traveling to exotic places, meditating or observing religious ceremonies, or just having a good time.
But alas! All of these are just “cans of motor oil,” no matter how earnestly they search, unless they look for the right solution to their problems. God created us all with a huge hole in our hearts that only He can fill, and He has made provision to do just that. He is the one and only “soul mechanic.” For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16 / ESV).
And the “fix” can be found in Romans 10:10: . . . if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Thanks be to God who loved us even before He created all things and made a plan for our salvation. May we accept His free gift and ever allow Him to continue to pour the “motor oil” of His grace into our souls to keep us in good running condition—rattle-free.
