It's the gold rim china with a little crack
that it got the day we argued
and you dropped it
we keep it to remember how fragile
our hearts
It's Grandpa's hand curved behind his ear
to hear his grandson say his abcs
and 123s
so loud he's almost yelling
but grinning
It's the trophy held high in the sky
by the hands that wouldn't
give up trying
though everybody said he's
too small
It's the measure of sugar leant by a neighbor
that started a friendship
that lasted forever
though one of them's gone now and
it's hard
It's the portion of coffee that got Daddy going
before six every morning
to his backbreaking job
that kept food on the table
with love
It's the empty hands held together to catch
a sparkling drink from
the first Spring rain
when we were young and dreamed
good things
It's what overflows from the Father above
the goodness and mercy that brims
and spills out
like his blood on that day
at Golgotha
