The day is free of obligation
No lunches to make, no kids to drive
And wonder of wonders, in this rainy land,
The sun rises in a blue sky.
The Lord has blessed my soul
And I am glad today
My time with him is rich and deep.
I sense his love and worship him.
I am alone with him
And I am glad today.
The house begins to stir;
The shower runs;
Someone shuffles into the kitchen,
Pours a coffee
And disappears.
Downstairs the phone rings and is answered.
A groan erupts. Frustration.
My happiness shifts slightly
But there are reassuring thoughts,
Promises.
And I am still glad today.
Heavy footsteps on the stairs.
“I forgot…I have practise.
Can you give me a ride? Right now?”
A tiny pin in my bubble.
But… “Sure,
Just let me get dressed …”
The car is cold and nearly empty.
Do I have enough gas?
My bubble has burst.
What’s for dinner?
No meat left in the freezer.
I’ll stop at the store and see what comes to mind.
I’m so tired of cooking,
Of creating mental menus
Day after day!
At my age, I should be allowed a break.
Wish we could afford to go out more,
Like our friends do.
I wish.
The market is busy.
I chose the wrong time to shop.
Should have gotten a cart;
This weighs a ton.
Why do I always, always do this??
Why don’t I make a list,
Come once a week,
And use a cart?
The line doesn’t move.
An irate customer hold us up.
The cashier looks tired,
Maybe sick,
Harried.
Finally my turn.
I look her in the eye.
“Having a tough day?”
Is that a tear?
“This isn’t an easy job, is it?
People can be difficult.”
She’s quick and efficient and I tell her so.
She smiles, relaxes.
“God bless the rest of your day!”
“Thank you.”
As I leave, the clouds have covered the sun.
As usual.
But I am glad today.
