It is a beautiful blue ball suspended in space, and yet over it lurks an ominous felt-not-seen darkness. It is a darkness more hideous than the physical blackness which covers half the globe during the time when it is shielded from the sun’s rays each day on its daily cycle.
While ever it is called ‘Today’, beware the darkness.
The lives of Earth’s inhabitants, human, animal and even plant, are also divided into periods established according to the spin of the earth and its journey around our bright star, the sun.
For we people, festivals, holy days and just-plain-ordinary days are generally marked by the position of the Earth relative to the sun.
One spin of the Earth on its axis equates to one day - perhaps the most basic of divisions. Sleep, eat, work and play, day after day after day.
And over it all, evil lurks.
While ever it is called ‘Today’, beware the darkness.
Some people spend their days, from birth till death, in one part of the earth. Others flit across the globe in tiny tin tubes with immovable fixed wings. Summer to winter, aromatic delights to bland stodge, dictatorships to democracies, war-torn wasteland to holiday wonderlands, daylight to daylight to yet more daylight fleeing the physical darkness, they travel. Yet the darkness of evil remains unrelentingly oppressive.
While ever it is called ‘Today’, beware the darkness.
Rich or poor, old or young, free or slave, our lives are lived one day at a time. History has provided ample examples of people who succumbed to the ominous darkness commiting seemingly insignificant sin, yet whose choices that day changed their own futures and that of the generations which followed.
One such example happened on a day when the sky shone blue, a day when even the night was lit up by the Shekinah glory in the cloud which Moses and the people were following. It was on a revolution which they knew as ‘Today’ although from our perspective is now ancient history. The people lost focus. They allowed the Darkness to enter their midst. They grumbled. Nothing worse than that … no rape or murder, theft or attack. Yet their choice affected their tomorrows for many more spins and revolutions of our world.
Our little blue planet spins yet again, as it has done for millennia and will do till the end of time as we know it. Another day dawns for humanity. It is Today. Again.
While ever it is called ‘Today’, beware the darkness.
Hebrews 3:7, 8, 13 “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion during the time of testing in the desert… But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” (NIV)
