"Good morning kiddos," she greeted over the din of activity. "It's time for our story."
Knowing the drill, the kids put away toys and jostled for multi-colored plastic chairs arranged in a semi-circle. Ms. Shelley held up a hand. "Hands up, mouths shut," she said smiling.
Ms. Angie continued. "Ok class, do any of you..."
Hands shot into the air waving wildly and the entire group broke into, "Me, me, me."
"Hold on kids," Ms. Angie said laughing. "Hands down. You haven't even heard the question yet."
One hand continued to wave with great fervor.
"Yes, C. J., what do you need?" inquired Ms. Shelley.
"I gotta go potty." C.J. sprang from his chair and dashed out the door, walking as fast as his crossed legs would allow. Ms. Shelly trooped behind and waited at the restroom door.
Ms. Angie continued. "Class, can any of you tell me what this is?" She held up a picture depicting a scene from the Book of Genesis.
"It's a rainbow," several shouted at once.
"Very good," she nodded. "Can anyone tell me why God created rainbows?"
A little girl with bouncing blonde locks nearly leapt out of her chair, leaning towards her teacher, hand raised.
"Ok, Lila," Ms. Angie giggled. "Why did God give a rainbow?"
"So leprechauns could find pots of gold," she answered with confidence.
"That's a good guess, but it's not quite right. The reason God gave rainbows was to remind Noah and even us still today that He would never destroy the earth by a flood again."
"So where do lepwechauns come in?" Jonah inquired. "'Dere are big bwown pots of gold at the end of th' wainbows, wight?"
"Yeah," jumped in Ethan. And th' lepwechauns have bushy bwown beards...at leas' sometimes."
Ms. Shelley followed C.J. back into the room, nudging him into his seat.
"Wait a minute class. We can talk about leprechauns after we talk about the rainbow."
"Leprechauns? Cool!" shouted C.J. "I love Lucky Charms! I eat’em for snacks."
"Me too. Me too," many agreed.
Noah stood to his feet. "I wanna snack.”
“Yeah, me too,” Nathan added wiping his nose on his sleeve.
The children hurtled headlong to the table, waiting for the teachers to scrounge treats from the snack closet.
Ms. Shelley rifled through the offerings, finding an unopened package of Nutter Butters. “How about these?” she asked raising the package high into the air.
Twelve little heads nodded enthusiastically.
As the kids began munching, Ms. Angie dragged her stool to the head of the table. “While you’re eating,” she began, smiling, “let’s continue our lesson about the rainbow.”
“And lepwechauns,” piped up Lila.
“And bwown beards,” added Ethan.
Normally shy, Evan timidly raised his hand. “Yes, Evan?” Ms. Angie encouraged.
“I thought Bwown Beard was a piwate.”
“Pirates,” C. J. exclaimed. “Cool!”
Ms. Angie closed her lesson book and called the class to attention. “Children, I want to share one very important lesson with you.”
All little eyes focused on the teacher.
“God loves you.”
C.J.'s hand shot into the air. Ms. Angie called on the enthusiastic little boy. “Yes, C.J.?”
“I’ve never been to Sunday School before today, and I thought it would be boring.”
“And what have you decided?”
“Are you kidding? Lepwechauns…pirates…pots of gold! Sunday School is awesome!”
