single glowing light
slowly rises, gaining
momentum and brilliance
turning the stage from
deepest indigo to
radiant blue.
A fantastic drama unfolds,
never-ending, ever-changing,
adjusting its color to
the times and seasons,
the acts and scenes played
out on its vast and
dynamic panorama.
Crystalline, clear winter blue
hard as a diamond shot with cobalt
lit by a pale wintry sun
turns dismal, its
cold pale beauty hidden by
a dull gray blanket
heavy with the promise of snow.
Mercurial, whimsical spring blue
sometimes the soft blue of
a robin’s egg, sometimes its
sweet cerulean smile blotted out
with black smudges like
dirty finger prints,
angry storm-tossed clouds.
Sultry, hazy summer blue
unrelenting, heat-shimmering,
eye-searing, occasionally
relieved by tempestuous
torrents of rain racing by
on swift, nimble feet.
Crisp, clean fall blue
azure purity adorned with
meringue-like creations,
puffy and white, turning
sullen and surly, painted
with metallic gray striations.
As the play draws
to an end, across
the sapphire stage
light slowly ebbs
streaming behind it a trail of ribbons—
oranges, fuchsias, magentas—
slowly, gradually it deepens to
a deep midnight blue.
