I lived to please others,
My teachers, my parents
My sisters and brothers.
I heard rules and advice
‘Til I thought I would burst.
“Don’t wear that ’til Sunday,
Never eat dessert first.”
“Be frugal with money,
Go to bed with the sun.
You may eat the burger,
But you must skip the bun.”
Then when midlife arrived,
I felt very empty.
I’d rarely let late nights
Or rich desserts tempt me.
It was time for a change-
I resembled a prune.
It was time to be bold,
To eat breakfast at noon.
To sing loudly in church,
Giggle too, if I choose,
And take mambo lessons
In red open-toe shoes.
To eat roasted peanuts;
Throw the shells on the floor.
And make dozens of friends,
Then have parties galore.
Time to rescue a dog,
And make him my buddy.
Who cares if his feet get
The carpet all muddy?
Time to go on a cruise
And look out to the sea,
And put extra sugar
In my glass of iced tea.
I’ll live to the fullest
During my golden years,
Without any regrets,
Without worries or fears.
And then when it’s my turn,
I’ll die with a smile
I’ll thank God for my life
And say “That was worthwhile.”
