“Sweetheart, I just want to make a difference in this world. There are so many children who can’t defend themselves, who have nothing. They will never have a chance if someone doesn’t stand up for them,” he’d heard her explain on more than one occasion.
Graham would just grasp her arms, look her in the eyes and say, “I love you and I’d never keep you from doing the work God has called you to do. Just make sure that Saturday’s are my day, and God and I both get you on Sundays,” he would tease her.
Samantha knew she was a blessed woman. Graham had truly sacrificed for her; putting her through law school, going to family events alone and staring across the table at dinner time at an empty chair many nights. She knew all her hard work would be worth it.
“I can’t believe it! All my hard work to get through law school and make partner, now what am I going to do? This can’t be happening!” she stared at her doctor in disbelief.
“Samantha, the results are absolutely positive.”
“Ohhh! I know, I can feel it already, the nausea, the dizziness…” Samantha put her hand on her forehead, “I just can’t believe this. I thought you said I would never be able to have children.”
“Well, I did too, but sometimes you can never tell how your body might repair itself. It’s really quite a medical anomaly. I really can’t explain it,” Dr. Webber said shaking his head. “But you are quite pregnant and I would like to do an ultrasound next week, just to make sure everything’s okay.”
Samantha decided to wait until the ultrasound before telling Graham, just in case it was a fluke.
Samantha walked in the door after the ultrasound, her face as white as a ghost.
Graham met her at the door. “Honey, what’s wrong, you look awful.”
Samantha held three fingers up in the air and just kept muttering something about ‘three of them’. Finally, Samantha became coherent enough to announce to her husband that she was not only pregnant, but also carrying triplets.
He was overwhelmed with shock and joy and then tears suddenly began to pour down Samantha’s face.
“I won’t be able work anymore. All those children I was trying to help. I’ll feel like I’m abandoning them.” Samantha hung her head and rubbed her already protruding belly.
“Honey, you know that someone else can carry your load while you’re out on maternity leave.” He walked over behind her and wrapped his arm around her, resting his hands on top of hers.
“You don’t understand Graham,” she turned to look him face to face. “I’m giving it up. All I’ve worked so hard for, I’m giving it up.”
Graham tilted his head in confusion.
“I can’t divide myself like that. My mom always worked so many long hours at the restaurant, leaving me alone at home; no one to help me with homework, no one to read me a story and sometimes there was barely any food in the cupboards. You know that’s why I became a children’s advocate. I thought I couldn’t have any children; that’s why I poured myself into my career like I did. But now, everything is different. I have a bigger responsibility. I can’t save the world if I can’t even be here for my own flesh and blood.”
“Sweetheart, you can still work, I’ll stay home with the babies. You can work a lighter schedule. I know how much your job means to you.”
“Graham, I never told you this, because I didn’t think I could have children, but I promised myself if I ever did, that I‘d be the best mom I could possibly be and stay home. My work is helping children and I guess I’ve been reassigned to a new case by my number one boss, God Himself!” she smiled, feeling overjoyed about the whole situation after realizing this new perspective.
Laughing, Graham squeezed his wife tight, “Like I’ve told you, I would never keep you from doing the work God has called you to do.”
Samantha looked at Graham, “Correction. You mean the work he’s called US to do…what a job it’s going to be!”
