“Do you mean trouble maker? What is he getting up to this time?
“He’s cutting down Gopher trees.”
“Oh, Jehoshephat! Why do you think he is doing that?”
“I asked him. The crazy old fool says he is going to build a box.”
“Out of Gopher wood? It will be a strong box then, maybe stronger than Cypress wood.”
“Yes, and he says Yahweh has told him to do it because of the evil times we live in.”
“Oh, don’t mind him. He’s always on about the things we do wrong. Why us? Everybody is doing the same. Who does he think he is, the pious old coot?”
“He says the way we live has made Yahweh angry because we no longer follow the old ways. He says we are immoral, unethical, liars and cheats. He calls us adulterers and blasphemers, besides doing what he says are unspeakable atrocities.”
“Just let him carry on with his boring ways. We have better things to do than listening to him. Have some more wine, and come to bed.”

“Have you seen what our neighbour is doing now?”
“No, I don’t go anywhere near him. He’s like a barking dog. Never stops complaining and it’s always the same. After fifty odd years who wants to listen to the same old same old?”
“But you should see his box. He calls it an ark and has his sons helping him. They all have only one wife each!”
“How tedious and boring. I wonder what he does for entertainment.”
“I suppose that’s it. He says he is going to fill his ark with animals because there is going to be a flood.”
“Whatever does he mean? What is a flood anyway? And why does he want to fill his box with animals? How many does he think it will hold?”
“Well, it’s already 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide and 20 cubits high, still rising. They are even coating every layer with resin because he says it has to be waterproof.”
“I don’t know why you listen to the old curmudgeon. Though I must admit, he’s good for a laugh.”
***
“You know what? That man has really lost it now.”
“Lost what?”
“His sense, that’s what. But I think we should move. Have you seen all the animals wandering around? Some are bigger and stranger than any I have ever seen. Where are they coming from? He’s mad!”
“We’ve been saying that for years. Most other folks have gone long ago. Everybody got tired of his criticising crankiness. At least we can see our gods while the one he talks about is unseen. How old do you think he is anyway? He doesn’t seem to get older but stronger. He still chunters on about his God, Yahweh, being powerful enough to destroy us because we are so disobedient.”
“He must be pushing 600 from what he says he can remember. Now he is saying we must watch the skies. I actually stopped listening to him years ago, so why start now?”

Genesis 6:11: Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. God saw how corrupt the earth had become for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.
Genesis 7:6 & 7: Noah was six hundred years old when the flood waters came on the earth. And Noah and his sons and his sons’ wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood.
Hebrews 11:7: By faith, Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
Matthew 24:36-39: No-one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man …”
