When you feel you’re walking on eggshells and every one of those fine little pieces pierce your feet with unrelenting discomfort it’s good to know you are not alone. After a recent spell in hospital some special verses have reminded that no matter where we are or what is happening, these things come to pass.
2 Corinthians 1:3-5 brings such encouragement. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves received from God.”
Isn’t that confirmation that “in all things” God is at work? It is so important to recognise that we are a living testimony of our faith. 1 Peter 1:6-7 proclaims: “In this, (our hope and faith) you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed.”
It is our privilege as Christians to know that no experience is wasted as we walk in the light and strength of our Lord and that our testimony can challenge and help others to understand the importance of being able to do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
As a carer, it is sometimes easy to feel particularly vulnerable to moodiness and introspection. I have been reading a rather humorous book on caring written by a man who cares for his wife suffering from Huntington’s.* It is interesting to realise how, in his honesty, he feels the same frustrations and fragility of us all. Instead of referring to those we care for as disabled or patients he offers the term “our piglets” translated as the “Person I Give Love and Encouragement To.”
The encouragement and love we show come with the love and peace that only our God can give in abundance, passing all normal understanding.
Let us go forward in the knowledge that we are valuable in God’s sight and provided for in our every need.
"Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? You men of little faith!” Luke 12:27-28
