“Sit down Tomâ€, he said. “No use getting upset.â€
Reluctantly Tom plopped down on the hard stone floor.
“How do you do it?†he asked.
“Because I know who made me. I know that even though the world will put us on trial, and it will cost us our lives, I am going to a better place. The one who made me, made a home for me also.â€
“Jim, there was a boy. He must’ve been around twelve years old. He wanted a bible but he was afraid. I got him to come over and take one. But then, then a man snatched him up and the boy dropped the bible.†As Tom talked, tears began to roll down his face.
“If I could have gotten a chance to talk to him…â€
His ribs were beginning to ache again. With every breath, the broken bones crunched in and out.
Jim, always being the protective older brother, finished the sentence… “Then you could have saved him, brought him to Jesus and changed his life forever.â€
“Yes,†Tom answered. “But then the guns and the soldiers; the world went black.â€
“The Spirit is at work already in that boy, as well as in this town. That is why we are here. God will finish the work that he has begun. As for now brother, let the fire fall.â€
With closed eyes, they began to worship their God, the creator of Heaven and Earth. The words were tired and the tune off key. Their praise seemed to fall flat and to reverberate no higher than the low ceiling of the small stagnant cell.
How great is our God, they sang. The two lifted their hands, as well as their voices, high into the air. Together, they transcended space and time, flowing like liquid, into another atmosphere. They left the pain of their present state behind, and entered the presence of God in the Holy of Holies.
The ground began to rumble, the walls began to shake and quake. Distant gunfire echoed between the buildings. They were oblivious to it all until, at last, a charge blew the cell door from its’ hinges. Finally, they opened their eyes to the physical world once again.
In walked a dusty man with a ragged beard and sunglasses. He wore his baseball cap backwards and rested his hands on a large machine gun. Beyond his special ops facade, Tom noticed the patch velcroed to the man’s vest. It was the flag of the United States of America. This man was the personification of everything that Tom loved – a new creation.
…One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
– “And that’s why I am standing in front of you today,†Tom concluded. “I have had the opportunity to travel the world, to snatch men from the fires of Hell. I am forgiven and set free, a brand new man, and you can be too. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life…â€
