My husband was terminally ill.
One whole section of the kitchen counter was devoted to his medicines. Another spot was covered with a blood pressure cuff, blood sugar monitor and thermometer. The bathroom counter sported various creams and prescription skin products. In the corners were crutches and a walker.
How could I clean around all that? Besides he needed me more than my house did.
And then he passed. His medicines were placed in a box and carried to the police department where they disposed of them. His insulin pens, crutches and other paraphernalia that could still be used were taken to our local health clinic for the uninsured.
My house was still dirty.
A friend had recently started a cleaning service. I contacted her and we made an appointment for her and three employees to attack my house. Cobwebs were removed, windows cleaned, rugs washed, carpets cleaned. As the day wore on, my house began sparkle.
It felt good.
At the end of the day, she presented me with a bill. I produced my checkbook and with pen in hand, prepared to pay her for the work she had accomplished. The invoice displayed the name of her company across the top.
