We do not live as sorry specimens over a load of sin and under sad circumstances. As Christians we can enjoy the infilling of the Holy Spirit which gives that incomparably great power to us who believe; that same power that raised Christ from the dead. So, if we were dead in our transgressions and sins in which we used to live when we followed the ways of the world, how much now, when filled with His grace and mercy, can we refuse the discipline from a loving father that we may need to undergo?
Sometimes, when disaster strikes and we feel we cannot go on we wonder where God was that He should allow such a burden of misery. Did Job feel he had been given too much to endure? Did he ever realise that his story would be told throughout the centuries to show that even the righteous are allowed to see suffering?
God is at work behind the scenes, and though it brings no instant comfort to those in the throes of misery we are assured that He does not afflict us with more than can be borne with His undergirding. His thoughts are not our thoughts, nor His ways our ways, we are told in Isaiah 55:8, but His Word does not return to Him empty, accomplishing more than we can think or imagine. Yes, His Word is living and active and as we study and inhale what He has breathed out, then share what we have learned through our own circumstances, we can better understand that He is at work in ALL things. He is able to give strength in weakness, wisdom when we falter, hope in the throes of despair, and encouragement to go on – and on.
In 2 Corinthians 1-4 we read, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
We are a privileged people with access to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. We bow with thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly with the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. (Hebrews 12:22,23) And nothing, but nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Be encouraged if you are undergoing a heavy trial; it isn’t just trite but true - God is with you and He will not leave you without comfort.
