Have you had experiences similar to mine? Of course you have.

I need to copy and paste from a PDF to a Word document. A dozen times I succeed. Then the PDF no longer allows me to highlight anything.

A website I visit refuses to open. It tells me I have an obsolete copy of Flash. So I find where to download a new copy. Go through all the installation instructions. It fails. Look for an FAQ to explain what to do next.

(I told you you've had similar experiences. Why else would an FAQ suggest an answer?)

So I uninstall my Flash and go through the process of getting the latest release all over again. It fails. Oh well, I guess I didn't really need to see that page.

I spend hours on the phone or on chat with technicians for various software and hardware. Sometimes they help me solve the problem. Sometimes their own systems hamper them. Sometimes . . . No. I won't rant about customer service.

At the end of a long day, when I am eager to shut down and do something else, the beach ball starts spinning on the screen. When I used Windows machines, it was the hourglass. I want nothing more than to finish a paragraph, but the computer has already decided it's through for the day.

The ball spins. After a while it stops spinning. I type a word or two. It starts spinning again. Less than a minute's worth of work stretches to five.

Once, at work, I had to call in someone from the computer department to look at my machine. He moved my chair out of the way, got down on his knees, and bowed. He wanted me to think he was just checking all the cables. But I know an act of worship when I see it. He knew what the infernal machine demanded of him.

It's not just computers. The lawn mower that won't start at home starts perfectly in the shop. The TV loses its signal just when the field goal unit takes the field with 30 seconds on the clock to attempt to win the game.

We humans have managed to create machines that hate us. It must make God smile. After all, he made humans, and humans immediately decided to hate him.

Oh to have the same patience toward our machines as he has for us!

A truthful, honest look at the life of computer users. You captured the scenarios perfectly. I can relate to the Flash issue, among other topics you referenced.

Nice job. Hope you do well with the judges.

Your article made me smile! Yes, computers have a mind of their own, and seem to tease us at the worst possible times. We just have to be witty enough to outsmart them! Great job!
