In his dreams Joseph
Reached the greatest heights
With his brothers bowing low before him.
In reality, their envy threw him down a pit,
Where the first root to fulfill
God’s plan was laid.
His dream as a slave
Was to be faithful
His master’s wife was not part of his wage
Her anger and lies sent him deep in despair
To a dungeon of darkness and tears.
His roots must go deeper still.
The dreams
of two prisoners
Gave Joseph new hope
Someday he would see light of day
One prisoner died,
The other forgot him
His roots must reach deeper still
Into the heart of God.
Pharaoh’s dream
Brought Joseph out of despair
God gave him wisdom
In answer to prayer.
Seven years of plenty
Seven years of famine
Joseph’s roots were reaching
Deep into God’s plan
They would hold steady the tree growing high
When his brothers bowed low
He began to cry
A tree at its zenith would fall in a storm
if its roots don’t stretch deep in the ground.
...
Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” Genesis 50:19-21
Jacob's blessing:
“Joseph is a fruitful vine,
a fruitful vine near a spring,
whose branches climb over a wall.
With bitterness archers attacked him;
they shot at him with hostility.
But his bow remained steady,
his strong arms stayed limber,
because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob,
because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
because of your father’s God, who helps you,
because of the Almighty, who blesses you
with blessings of the skies above,
blessings of the deep springs below…” Genesis 49:22-25
...
“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord,
whose confidence is in him.
They will be like a tree planted by the water
that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8
