Whether we meet for pork chops, corn hole tournament, games for all ages, or bingo, a good time is what we look forward to. Renewing old friendships and making new ones are what is important. We used to attend “socials” where we could see who wore the nicest dress and what cute guys would be there. It was a chance for us to mingle with the other young people in a safe environment. Today, almost all of that is possible with social media in a different way. Therefore, human physical contact has been replaced with messaging and pictures sent from our phones or tablets.
The Internet is not always a safe place. Anything that is written on the internet is tracked, saved, used to entice you to buy things, and often used to bug you to death with emails you do not know how to stop or even want to receive. Just give me the old land line phone and thank God that it is not a party line so others can listen to the conversations. These new cell phones with the slightest touch changing the screens are not compatible with my arthritic fingers.
Oh, don’t get me wrong. I love the computer and I love to surf the `net and shop. I love the convenience of ordering and getting the package in a few days and even overnight in some cases. Since I have become more disabled, it opens a new world for me. The ability to set at my desk and view the world’s options are something I cherish.
The actual word “social” means that you belong to a certain group (society) whether it is voluntary or involuntary. I did not volunteer to be in the over 60 group, but life happens and you cannot control getting older. You can control your attitude about getting older. I will continue to be “social” whenever and wherever I can be. I will enjoy and encourage dinners with family or friends, whether they be eating out or in my home. Therefore, as long as I have a brain that works, I will use the Internet and social media to keep in contact with my family and friends and meet new people when possible. However, I will still use my old land line and my cell phone, too. I just need to improve my social media skills. LOL

Many are where you are and others will soon join the group and will wonder where did the time go?
Nicely written.
Blessings~
Thanks for sharing. I, too, remember the old school parties and socials. I like your social commentary on how we have continued to move away from being a face-to-face society to a text/social media one. I often wonder where that's going to lead us to.
So, not only was your piece warm and comfortable, it made me think more deeply about the topic you brought up, and that is possibly the highest purpose of writing.
Nice job.
