Hattie the hen strolled around Farmer Jay's barnyard feeling a little dejected. She had just laid a beautiful brown egg, probably one of her largest, and no one was very impressed. She puffed up her golden brown feathers and indulged herself in a dust bath. Aahh, now this is just what I need. Dirt went flying in all directions, and she soon stood up and shook. Now that wasn't quite as good as I had hoped for. Hattie thought unsatisified.
She headed down the path towards the woods in search of a really fat worm. That would do the trick for sure. A fat, juicy, wiggly worm would be the best breakfast she could think of.
As she quickened her pace at the thought of what awaited her in the woods, she was startled to hear a voice in ear.
“ Hattie, good morning,” a deep lovely voice spoke to her.
“Oh, good morning Lord!” Hattie answered back cheerfully. “Did you see that awesome egg I gave the farmer this morning? It was one of my best.”
“Yes, Hattie, I did see it, quite a wonder indeed. But right now I need to you listen to me, as you are heading for danger.” The Lords words of caution should have been all Hattie needed to stop her in her tracks . . . but Hattie had one thing on her mind, and it was food.
“Thank you, Lord. I will be sure to be on the lookout for wily rascals. I know you are with me, and once I grab that big fat worm that awaits me I will...” Hattie was interrupted.
Again the Lord spoke warning to his little hen.
“Hattie, return to the barnyard where there is plenty of food and water. You are entering dangerous lands.”
“Oh, what humor you are in today, Lord. I will be back in a ...”
Hattie's voice was cut off in a split second. At the snap of a jaw, pain shot through Hattie's body. She felt as though she were in a the grip of death itself. Her breath was cut off, and feathers flew here and there.
“Hattie, take a deep breath and scream with all your might. Ruffle what feathers you can and put up a fight,” the Lord's urgent direction came again.
“Scream? Scream? I can barely breath, how on earth can I possibly...”
“Just do it, Hattie, now.”
So Hattie finally listened and with all she had left in her little bruised body let out a horrific sounding scream, and at the same time ruffled every feather she had left.
The fox was so startled, he opened his mouth to tell the little chicken to be quiet when out popped Hattie. She darted into the brush where he could not reach her.
Hearing footsteps approaching, he took off in a flash, and was not seen again.
Hattie moaned and wept. Large gentle hands parted the bushes and picked Hattie up. She was tenderly carried back to the safety of the barn and given a soft nest of hay to rest in and heal.
It took only a few days for Hattie to feel up to walking around again.
“Hattie, good morning.” She heard the comforting voice of her Lord.
She wasn't quite her cheerful self yet, and was a tad bit embarrassed too. She pointed her beak at the ground and did not look up. “Good morning, Lord,” Hattie spoke quietly.
“ I see you are feeling better, my little hen. I want to make sure you understand that I wanted you to listen to me and do what I asked, not because I was trying to keep you from something better, but because I was trying to protect you.”
Hattie let out a sigh. “I know that, my Lord, and truly I should have listened. I was so determined to have that worm after laying the best egg that it was all I could think about. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving my life, but I do want to remind you that you did give me a bird brain and . . . oh . . . look at that juicy bug. I'll be right back, Lord!”
Hattie shot off, and the sounds of hens clucking, a rooster crowing, and Someone chuckling filled the little barnyard of Farmer Jay.
