“Well I was just thinking, I have a question...”
“Oh,oh!” Jeff blurts out knowing that whenever she says, 'I have a question' , it always involves some outlandish request.
“All my friends have phones, and...well...my 16th birthday is coming up and...I... I was just thinking.”
“We have talked about that before. You know how we feel about teens and phones.”
Jeff was silent. Amber's mother, Jill, gave Jeff the look of, “You better sit down and talk to her about it”.
“I'll tell you what, after dinner we'll talk.” Jeff got a wink from Jill.
”Cool beans...I mean...thank you father; that is a wonderful and mature...I mean a wise...I mean...oh you know what I mean.”
Amber and her father sat on the couch, while Amber's grandfather, Cecil, sat in the recliner with a hot cup of tea.
“Well, go ahead,” said Amber awaiting the usual fatherly sermon on why she shouldn't have a phone.
“Look over at your grandfather.”
Cecil held a saucer in one hand and the cup of hot tea in the other. He cautiously poured some steaming tea into the saucer, blew a steady stream of air over the saucer, sipped the tea , and made what Amber classified annoying noises.
“Why does he do that?” asked Amber not thinking that there was a point for her father's request.
“You know that your grandpa is British, well a lot of America's founding fathers were British too.”
“What does that have to do with me wanting a phone?”
Jeff continued, “ Our founding fathers brought with them a lot of traditions. One was pouring hot tea into a saucer to let it cool down before drinking it. George Washington had a conversation with Thomas Jefferson about the Senate and House using your grandpa's tea drinking to make a point.”
“What point?” Amber still reeling with wonderment as to how this had anything to do with her life.
“Our government is made up of The House of Representatives and the Senate. They are Similar to the House of Commons and House of Lords in Great Britain.
“Dad, I learned that in 5th grade.”
“I know, but did you know why we have both?”
“I am sure your gonna tell me.”
“Well, Washington explained that the House represents the heated passions and desires of the people, while the Senate weighs these desires to see if they benefit the whole country. They are to wisely consider all the bills, cool them down and make decisions that are prudent and just.”
“And!” Amber let out a gasp
“You have a cup and saucer inside of you. Your spirit is the cup filled with hot desires, wants, and passions. The Holy spirit is the saucer. It takes your requests and blows the will of God over your steaming desires and when it is cooled down, it communicates back to you God's wise decisions. You then must drink it down and be satisfied.”
“Way to deep for me papsy,” said Amber with her silly, but adorable, smirk.
“Okay. We study the bible at home, you go to Sunday school and also listen to Pastor Jim at services. When God's word is imbedded in your heart the Holy Spirit will use that to help cool down those natural things your body wants like too much make-up, or cloths that are too revealing. We have taught you to pray about all things before making a decision. Right?”
“Yep.”
Amber looked intently at her grandfather slurping the cooled down tea from the saucer, then got up and headed out of the room.
“Where are you going?” asked her father with a puzzled look.
Amber grinned and responded, “I am going to talk this over with the Holy Spirit, love you,” Amber dawning that silly smirk said, “love ya grandpa, thanks.”
