Startled, Maggie looked up from her book. “That’s what, dear?”
Dave pulled off his reading glasses and gestured excitedly to the magazine. “I’ve just finished reading this article about how difficult it is for people to reacclimate to regular society after being released from prison. Apparently it’s a real problem.”
Maggie didn’t see where he was going with this. “Well sure, I’ve seen Shawshank Redemption…”
Dave interrupted. “But this says it’s a real problem for our county. The prison is only 15 miles away, you know.”
Maggie sighed. “Don’t remind me.”
Dave continued. “But don’t you see? This could solve the problem with our church!”
Maggie’s eyes widened. “Problem? What problem? This is the first church you’ve ever pastored that doesn’t seem to have any problems. This town is full of upper-middle class professionals. Our entire congregation is composed of two-income, highly educated families. You actually don’t have to beg for money from the pulpit every month. This church is great!”
“That’s just the problem,” Dave replied. “The church is full of rich professionals who are completely out of touch with those less fortunate. They drive Mercedes and vacation in the South of France. Jesus tells us to help the poor and needy. Our congregation never encounters the poor and needy.”
Maggie suspiciously regarded her husband. “What exactly did you have in mind?”
Dave stood up and excitedly paced the room. We’ll start a mission project, right here in our church. I’ll go out to the prison and get information on those convicts that are about to be released or have recently been released. We’ll match them up with members of our congregation to act as mentors. They can help them find jobs, give them a ride to church, help them reenter the community…”
Maggie looked lovingly at her husband. “Sweetheart, I admire your passion, but I’m afraid it won’t work.”
Dave stopped his pacing. “And why is that?”
In all seriousness, Maggie looked up at him and said “Because you just can’t mix pros and cons.”
