Middle aged, and feeling reflective and exhausted, a weary mother curled herself up on the couch. Grabbing a hair-clip off of the end table, she whipped her hair up in to a messy clump on the top of her head, sighed, and closed her eyes.
The television blared loud from the other room. No one was watching it. The dog snored soundly, asleep on the floor next to her. No one was watching him, either. The odor of leftover pizza lingered heavy. Cold air forced it’s way through closed windows. The sun had long set leaving only a hint of crimson red reflecting off the clouds.
“Are you coming?” the littlest one called from her room.
“Mom! I’m waiting for you,” the middle child added to the beckoning.
The kids rustled around in to their rooms, waiting for her to come up and say the final words of encouragement for the day and pray.
Thoughts drifted in and out of her mind, as she tried to stay awake, in order to get upstairs and do what she did every day.
It wasn’t always easy to do the right thing for her family, without grumbling and complaining, or giving up hope. It wasn’t always easy to get up and brush her teeth, take a shower and get dressed. It wasn’t always easy to believe that God had good things for her and her children. It wasn’t always easy to fight selfishness. It wasn’t always easy to embrace that God was well aware of every detail of their lives, even when He seemed silent.
But she was learning, and He was changing her, for her good and His glory.
For it was on those dark and disappointing days, when she learned how to practice patience, walk in humility and laugh at the future, not lick old wounds.
It was on those days, when she learned what it meant to wait on the Lord, not for a solution, but rather for a glimpse of Him.
It was on those days, when things didn’t make sense and there were more questions -- only questions -- and no answers, when she learned what faith was, sure of what she hoped for, and certain of what she did not see.
It was on those days, when loneliness filled the emptiness of her heart, when she learned how to allow the Lord to move within her, and be her all in all.
It was on those days when she learned what it meat to die to self and live for Christ.
And so, at day’s end, again, she found the strength and the energy and the dignity to stand up and walk upstairs and give just a bit more of herself to those she loved.
She spoke tender words of love and prayed. She gave them Jesus.
Because, again, at day’s beginning and middle and end, she knew that all she and they really ever needed, was Him.
