" I just talked to a man named Kolya on the street. I often see him drunk there. He is a mess. I asked if someone could visit him and he agreed."
After the meeting the pastor and his wife dropped in. The bedsitter was strewn with empty wine bottles and there were saucers full of cigarette butts. Stale smells hung around the room. By the way the room was arranged and its overall cleanliness, it was evident that when he was not drinking he managed the place well.
He was a good looking man in his forties. He had a mustache like Clark Gable, was of medium height, had a neat physique and well-proportioned features. In spite of being drunk, Kolya managed to hold a cogent conversation. He told the pastor and his wife how he had fought as a captain in the Soviet army in Afghanistan..
"How long have you been drinking?" the pastor asked.
"Many years. My wife left me because of it."
"And this time?"
"Four days."
The pastor asked if they could pray for him. Kolya agreed. After a short prayer he and his wife left their phone number and left.
Kolya phoned two days later, in a panic.
"I cannot bear 'them' any longer," he said, " they hang around my room and tell me that I will soon be theirs and with them. They promised me anything I want if I do what they say. They also said they did not like you coming."
Kolya agreed to go into a psychiatric ward for alcoholics. The pastor's wife visited him often and he could not wait to commit his heart to the Lord 'after 'they' chased him up the fire escape to the roof and cajoled him to jump and fly.'
He asked to be baptized to be free of 'them'. After that he came regularly to the meetings - when he was not drinking. For five years there was a pattern of being sober for three months and then he would go on a binge for several days. Later this was complicated by a prescribed pill addiction which he kept hidden from everyone. One day he called the pastor in to confess this hidden sin. He stopped taking the pills suddenly and went 'cold turkey'. The doctors would not have recommended it, but he did it relatively easily.
Over the years the congregation prayed and prayed. They were often on the verge of giving up whenever he returned to his addictions. But they still kept praying.
As time went on he stopped drinking until he went without a drink for two years. Unfortunately, because of past inconsistency, attempts at reconciliation with his wife failed and she filed for divorce.
One day he came to the pastor's place.
"I have been speaking with a Christian woman in the States on Skype for the last two months. We met through a Christian matchmaker ministry on the internet. We want to meet."
A month later they married in California.
The pastor was walking down the street of the neighborhood where Kolya live.
He came across and old drinking acquaintance of Kolya.
"Where is Kolya?" he asked the pastor.
"He's flown off to the States," the pastor replied, "on new wings," he added.
