“Hey, Pedro!” Joshua called out from the shore over the crashing waves.
“Hi Josh.”
“Are you going to come down and join us?”
“Yeah, give me just a minute.”
“Well, don’t take too long, we gotta get started before the sun comes up.”
“I’ll be down there.”
“Okay! Make it quick—everyone’s waiting. We got the bonfire stoked-up early this year.” Josh turned and walked back toward the gathering crowd for The Annual Big Fish Fry.
Pedro raised both hands in submission. “Dear Lord, thank You for this wonderful day. Thank You for allowing me to take part in this skit. I pray that the lost souls who are visiting here today will be touched and drawn closer to You. Help me play the part of Peter—as if I was there with You. Help Josh play your part—as if he was You. In Your Name, Jesus. Amen.”
“Welcome ladies and gentlemen to The 5th Annual Big Fish Fry.” Josh paused and scanned the faces of family and friends around him. “This year we have a special treat as we are expanding our skit to include boats on the water. I am taking my time here, so that Pedro can get into position for the skit.” Josh looked out at the nearest boat on the water and received a ‘thumbs up’ from Pedro. “Okay, here we go!”
Josh narrated and played the part of Jesus. “At dawn Jesus was standing on the beach, but the disciples couldn’t see who he was. He called out, ‘Fellows, have you caught any fish?’”
“No,” they all replied simultaneously.
“Then Jesus said, ‘Throw out your net on the right-hand side of the boat, and you’ll get some!’ So they did, and they couldn’t haul in the net because there were so many fish in it.
“Then the disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, ‘It’s the Lord!’ When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his tunic (for he had changed for work), jumped into the water, and headed to shore. The others stayed with the boat and pulled the loaded net to the shore, for they were only about a hundred yards from shore. When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them—fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread.
“‘Bring some of the fish you’ve just caught,’ Jesus said. So Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore. There were 153 large fish, and yet the net hadn’t torn.
“‘Now come and have some breakfast!’ Jesus said. Then Jesus served them the bread and the fish. This was the third time Jesus had appeared to his disciples since he had been raised from the dead.
“After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’”
“Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.”
“‘Then feed my lambs,’ Jesus told him. Jesus repeated the question: ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’”
“Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.”
“‘Then take care of my sheep,’ Jesus said. A third time he asked him, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me?’
“Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said,”
“Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.”
“‘Jesus said, ‘Then, feed my sheep. I tell you the truth, when you were young, you were able to do as you liked; you dressed yourself and went wherever you wanted to go. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and others will dress you and take you where you don’t want to go.’ Jesus said this to let him know by what kind of death he would glorify God. Then Jesus told him, ‘Follow me.’”
“I will follow you, Josh.”
“Nice! Would you like a fish sandwich?”
“Yes, but let ME make seconds for everyone. I insist.”
“Okay.”
“Hey Josh—I meant to tell you: nice costume.”
“Thanks Pedro. You are looking more and more your part, too—especially with the beard.”
“Thanks everyone for coming out so early in the morning. Remember this: the Bible is the infallible Word of God—the ONLY truth. God bless you.”
“God bless you, too, Pedro.”
Josh and Pedro embraced.
