"I'm trying. It's so hot; I can hardly stand this much longer." Annie's sweat found its way into her mouth as she spoke. Tasting the salty substance that comprised her perspiration, she grimaced.
"Do you think we'll get there in time? I really promised I would. We both did." Gina's face and neck glistened in the sun.
"I honestly hope we do. We did promise them. But, we're only human." Annie tripped, and then quickly regained her balance, "I now know what a griddle cake must feel like…syrup and all." She managed a nervous laugh.
Annie smiled, albeit briefly. Her mind was focused on the task at hand. Suddenly, they heard a familiar sound. Turning slowly, they immediately became twin statues. Two feet away, a Boomslang was hanging from a nearby tree… poised and dangling in curiosity.
Annie found her vocal cords first, "Okay. Easy does it Gina. Remember, this is the timid snake. Walk slowly. Respect it, and it’ll respect you."
"Easy for you to say, he's closer to my head than yours!" Gina's feet began to move in coordination with Annie's. Together, they managed to escape unscathed. “Thank you Lord.” Annie said quietly, as Gina looked upward and smiled.
"Annie, remind me to purchase new undergarments when we go to town. I am in dire need this very moment."
Despite their circumstances, the two best friends always managed to laugh. No matter how dire. In fact, the two seemed to run on adrenaline overtime. It was the hazards of their job.
"Okay, we are within sight of our destination. I can see it from here." Annie looked at her friend, and smiled. "We’ll make it, and on time!" She paused to sip her precious water. Her gulp was the gulp that was heard around the world.
"Annie, your slurp and gulp is music to my ears. I think if we ever get back to the USA, we need to open a joint called, 'Slurp & Gulp.' It would definitely be a hit."
Gina slipped then fell into a pile of mud. The items in her black bag were securely in their place. "Well, at least I feel cool. There's nothing like a mud bath to help one's body temp fall. Not to mention, a mud bath would cost a bundle in New York City. The spa charges by the ounce. I'd dare say I'm covered in about two hundred dollars’ worth. I guess this is what’s called a freebie."
They chuckled for a moment, thankful to have arrived safely and on time. As they walked into the hut, a shroud of silence covered them instantly. It was so quiet, it was eerie. This was one time the cliché silence is golden didn’t apply. No, right now, silence is tarnished. The crowd watched them intently. Faces riddled with wide-eyed wonder. No movement. No sounds. Until, suddenly, a little boy came running over, smiling widely. His dad following close behind said, "So good to see you both. We have been waiting. We thought you might not come." The father’s English was very good.
"Good to see you too. This is Annie, and I'm Gina. We've come in the name of Jesus Christ." They opened their bags, and took out the tiny Bibles. "Jesus loves you. And, we’re going to tell you just how much He loves each and every one of you."
The sermon went well. There were several conversions. And many, who knew nothing about Jesus, gave themselves to Him that day. The Bibles were snatched up in a hurry. Some kissed it, and others rubbed their hands over the cover and smiled. It was an infinite pleasure to serve the Lord, and to bring His word to all the nations of the world.
The "danger" zone they were walking through earlier is quite commonplace for Gina and Annie. The risk they take is all in the name of Jesus Christ. And…He is worth it.
