Ronald’s friends tolerated his lofty ideas, but they thought he would change his mind when they reached the coast. Then it happened, land. The entire cloud was energized with excitement as warm air began mixing with the ice crystals. Everyone could feel their weight increasing. This was what they had hoped for, but not Ronald.
“This can’t be happening,” he said as he felt himself melting. “God, all I ever wanted was to be close to you. Don’t let this happen.”
One by one, Ronald’s friends became water droplets and started falling from the cloud. Cheers rang out as each droplet fell, diving head first into unknown territory.
“I’m not going,” Ronald said as he struggled to stay aloft.
“You don’t have any choice, Ronald,” said his friend Travis, “it’s what raindrops do.”
“It’s not true, I’m different,” Ronald cried, but it was too late. Travis was already falling. Within moments all of his friends began their descent. Ronald held his breath and struggled to stay afloat, but the warm coastal air was too much for him and down he went.
“God! Why have you let this happen?” he wailed as he fell from the sky. “I thought I was different, I thought you wanted to be with me!”
Rolling hills and a few farms decorated the landscape as it came into view, but it didn’t matter to Ronald. In a few minutes he would hit the ground and be finished. He had been the last one to leave the cloud and the winds had carried him further inland than his friends. He was frightened and alone. A building came into view and for a moment he thought he might land on the roof, but the breeze carried him just off to the side. He landed, splat, on top of a garbage can lid.
“Not good,” he said. “Why couldn’t I have landed in a lake or a river with some of my friends. I am going to perish on this filthy garbage can lid alone.” Ronald began to weep.
“Don’t be afraid Ronald,” said a voice from above.
“Who said that?” cried Ronald.
“It is I, the Lord.”
“Well this is a fine time for you to show up! It’s too late. I’m finished.” Ronald couldn’t hold back his anger and frustration. “Why didn’t you rescue me while you had the chance?”
“I have rescued you, Ronald. You’ll understand soon enough.” The sun began to warm the garbage can lid and Ronald felt his temperature rising.
“Great, now I’m going to fry like an egg!”
Eventually Ronald closed his eyes and decided to accept his fate. He let go of his disappointment and frustration. The sun continued to warm him. It didn’t hurt and, in a way, it felt comforting. Ronald noticed that as he got warmer he felt lighter. He opened his eyes and realized he was rising toward heaven.
“What’s going on here?” he called out.
“I’m bringing you home.” It was the Lord’s voice again. “Raindrops can’t fall up, Ronald, but steam can rise. I had to change you. The old Ronald had to go so the new Ronald could join me.”
“Is it true Lord? Is it really happening?” Ronald was weeping again. This time tears of joy.
“It’s true.”
Ronald couldn’t hold back his emotions. He wept uncontrollably. “Lord this is wonderful, I can’t believe it.” As he continued to rise, he began to feel ashamed. “Lord, forgive me for getting angry. I was afraid.” He was aware now that the Lord had been in control the whole time. “I love you Lord!” he called out. “All I ever wanted was to be with you.”
“I understand Ronald, it’s what I’ve always wanted, too.”
