I managed to get off the highway after fifty-six minutes in traffic. I was doing an average of 2 miles per hour when I finally got off at the next exit!
I was going to be late for my interview. I was fortunate that the CEO was running late, so I was given a reprieve, and able to be seen two hours later than originally scheduled.
The sky was black, and rain imminent, as storm clouds danced over my head, like the sword of Damocles. The GPS system was saying turn right, when there was no way to turn right, lest I wanted to go into a river. I turned onto a side street and stopped. I then called the company where I had the interview scheduled; by now the receptionist knew me intimately.
“Yes Christine, what is the issue this time?” She said with a slight edge. “Well, I need directions my GPS seems to be wrong, you know how that goes.” I laughed into the phone…I got nothing! And, then after what seemed an eternity, I received a cool, “I am not the one who gives directions, she is busy can you call back in five minutes?” I almost laughed into the phone, “Seriously?” I heard my voice ask. I decided to navigate on my own, and hung up after a polite, “thank you.”
I used map quest and got directions which appeared “normal.” By now I was thirsty, and in need of a drink of water, so I went into a store on the side of the road. I was in search of bottled water, and couldn’t find any! I looked at the cashier, and asked, “Where do you keep the water?” She looked at me with a shy smile and said, “We ran out of water and the delivery man was sick, so we don’t get any until tomorrow…but, we have soda and coffee.”
Oh my goodness! What next? This was beginning to sound like a screwball comedy of the 1930’s! I felt like I was the female version of “Cary Grant” in “Bringing up Baby!” I settled for a bottle of OJ.
When I entered my car, I heard a loud screech…And saw something from my peripheral vision, after taking a huge sip of OJ, I turned to see what the commotion was. I saw a cat going after a bird that was fighting like crazy to fly away, but kept getting hit down by the cat’s paw.
I was sickened by this, although I knew the cat was acting according to instincts; however, I am not one to view animal shows in the wild. I do not have the heart, or stomach for “survival of the fittest” documentaries. And, that was television, let alone watching it unfold live before my eyes!
I jumped out of the car so quickly I spilled OJ on my white dress, as my red high heel shoe flew off my foot! I ran to chase the cat away, and found the precious Cardinal on the ground; its small chest cavity visibly beating rapidly. I went over and picked it up and brought it to my car, not realizing I left my red high heel outside on the ground.
I said a prayer to God, and asked for His intervention with this little fellow; and asked for a healing for His little creature. As I began to pray, I noticed the sky that was so ominous just moments ago, became filled with light… as the sun broke through with brilliance. The Cardinal moved and got up! I was so happy I had tears rolling down my cheeks. I stepped out of my car and held it up to the sky and it flew away rather quickly.
I picked up my red shoe, looked at my stained white dress, and wondered if I should cancel this interview. When suddenly, a stunning white dove landed briefly on the hood of my car! Filled with hope and peace, I smiled.
