He snatched the door open and let the bright sunlight hit my blackened eye; I shuddered from the pain and from fear. “Sellout, I ain’t no sellout.” I couldn’t believe what I had gotten myself into. What had started so innocently now looked like it would get me killed.
“Oh my God, honey, what happened to you?” My mom’s frightened scream brought my dad into the kitchen. I was trying to sneak in. I waited all day, it took me that long before I could move, to come home. I had hoped they would be asleep; the company that I had been keeping and the things that I was doing had disappointed them, and they generally stayed out of my way. For some reason tonight they were up, and their reaction to my battered face proved that they loved me still.
How did all of this happen? My name is Timothy, and I was the new kid on the block. We’ve move around a lot dodging bill collectors, but my dad calls it looking for his place in the sun. When we moved here, I knew there was no place in the sun. I realized we were a poor family about to lose it all. My first night here I went for a walk, just checking the place out and met my man Max and his crew. He seemed friendly enough; he shared his beer and his reefer with me and on the first night invited me to come along with them on one of their raids. My job was to keep the car running, and when I heard the signal pick them up and drive like a bat out of hell. I didn’t ask any questions, I didn’t ask to see what they took; I just enjoyed the thrill of belonging. A strange thing happened though, and that’s why I’m in this mess.
My mom was tired too. She was determined to make this move our last one; she was determined to put down different roots. “Come go to church with me, honey,” she said one morning. I was sleeping off a drunk and let her know in no uncertain terms that church was the last place I was going. Just as serenely as she could be, she smiled, kissed me on the head, and said the same thing to my dad. I’m sure it was to keep us from fighting again, but for whatever reason he said, “Yes.” They left together and they have not been the same since.
Two weeks ago, they both approached me with the same request, “Son, come and go to church with us.” And I did. That day something changed in me; I found a new and better life. That new life definitely conflicted with the old one. You see, Max and his crew were Satanist. They went out into the countryside and broke into and denigrated churches. The week I gave my life to the Lord was the week Max let me see, first hand, what they did. The look on my face must have said it all. When I tried to witness and tell them about the love of God, they severely beat me and told me I better not say anything about this to anyone. They had never had a sellout in the crew, and they were not going to have one now.
Well, I made my decision. The police caught Max and the crew in the act. They were writing all kinds of filth on the walls of the church my mom and dad took me to that day. This raid was to prove my allegiance to them; instead I took pictures of them on my cell phone, called 911 and sent the pictures and a text. I may not be a sellout, but I am sold out. I made up my mind that I would live for Jesus, and I knew no weapon formed against me would prosper.
