Topic: Eternity (03/10/11)
In the marsh, it’s the beginning of Spring, and the boardwalk is curving up ahead. It disappears from sight in that lovely vanishing point. Along the ground, browns and blacks frame the boardwalk while overhead the hardwood trees are beginning to put forth green leaves. Some of the trees have pink blooms on the tips of their branches. Others have reddish baby leaves. But the focus of the picture is the boardwalk with its handrails.

Built of wood, it is weathered and gray. The nail heads are slightly exposed from the vibration of foot traffic. Tapering to nearly a point, the boardwalk wraps through the trees in a flirty disappearing act as our perspective reaches its limit.

Used by the Old Master painters, vanishing points are still important elements in good photography. Placed in the focal area of the scene, they draw the eye deep into the picture, holding the attention of the beholder.

Not only the drawing effect of the shape, but the aspect of mystery holds human attention to the presentation. What lies beyond that tiny tip? Imagination adds more to the picture than the lens could capture. It brings action to a still landscape as the viewer travels the scene, somewhat like reading a good story.

Finding a vanishing point in a fresh scene demands a camera or a canvass, but life is full of vanishing points. Some of them can be photographed.

Moving away to a new city, or a new country, leaves a vanishing point where the old city or country evaporates from view. We wonder what has happened beyond that last sight in our memory. When we lose a friend or relative to death, a vanishing point takes their place. Spent money drains into its own funnel of mystery, and youth fades from sight in time. Daylight fades into night and then night to day. Days fade to weeks, weeks to months until another year is gone.

Nobody enjoys the vanishing point that stretches behind, but the one ahead somehow is exciting. Regardless of the failures in our past, the future just out of sight is a vision of hope. The gambler has wagered his all on that elusive and invisible hope. He has only been deluded into thinking that he can win a jackpot somewhere up ahead.

God has put eternity in all our hearts. and we know by instinct that on the other side of the tip of that triangle is where we will find it. When we come to the vanishing point of our own life and take the next step, what we have never seen before bursts into view.

There is no more day fading into night, no more time, no age progression, and no more death. Past and future has no place in the kingdom of forever. Perspectives change in the home of eternity and I have a suspicion that nowhere will we ever find a vanishing point.

You captured my attention just as surely as the painting you described would captivate its viewer. Your colorful description of "vanishing points" is a fascinating take on the topic! This is one of my favorite Advanced entries for this week. Very well done!
