My pen hovered over the card, its tip ever threatening to make its mark but never fulfilling its promise. The way it wavered in my jittery hand left little assurance that it would succeed in its purpose should it ever descend to the page. It has been so long, too long. You probably won’t even read my words, I sighed. Even if you did read them, would they make a difference?
Ah, my beloved. My betrothed. If only this poor parchment could contain within it the love that fills my heart to bursting. Maybe then it would have the power to open your eyes and let you see with what trembling anticipation I await the fulfillment of our vows. That day, promised so long ago, when you are presented to me, resplendent in your gown so pure, your face glowing with a beauty that outshines the noonday sun, my beautiful bride with whom I will be one. Oh, how I long for that day with an ache in my heart that threatens to rip me asunder.
Yet, I hear such things about you, things that turn my jubilation to sorrow. My beloved, how could you turn so quickly from your first love? You knew I had to go for a time, but I promised to return. If only you had believed me, what pain it would have spared. Now I see you, my love, hurting, pain in your heart wracking you with my misery. I wish I could enfold in my arms and wash away the sorrow with my tears, to cleanse you and wash you with pure water that you may be now the glorious bride that you will be on the day we wed. With what joy we shall meet that day!
But, the time has not yet come. Instead, I have this postcard to fill with words that might turn your heart back to me. If only you might see this letter with the eyes of your youth before you strayed from your love. Then, you would receive the words with joy, a sign of my love for you. Ah, then you might return my love and know that I will return. My love, I have prepared a home for you as I promised and I will come back soon to bring you there. Wait for me, my love, I’m coming.
