SARAH
I just love this time of the year.
EDEN
Mommy?
SARAH
The weeks in December before Christmas are a wonderful time. I just love the music when they sing the word of God. (sings) Glorrrrrrrria, in Excelsis Deo--
EDEN
Mommy… Mommy?
SARAH
And I just love baking food for the church bake sale. (her phone vibrates) What? Oh, hold on, I just got a text.
EDEN
Mommy?
SARAH
Just a minute, Eden. I’m on the phone. (she leaves the rag on the table, then looks at the phone and touches it, then puts it back to her ear.) Okay, I’m back.
EDEN
Mommy?
SARAH
Hush, Eden, just another minute. Oh, the text was from Joe… It was really strange, he wrote, what can brown do 4 u? (Sarah steps over the opposite end of the table from Eden and begins mixing ingredients in a bowl.)
EDEN
Mommy… Mommy…
SARAH
Okay Sister, I gotta go, Eden’s driving me crazy and I gotta get this banana bread done before the bake sale tomorrow… I love you too. K, bye. (she clicks the phone off and sets it down.)
Okay, Eden, what?
EDEN
Why do bananas turn brown?
SARAH
(Sarah picks up a piece of paper with a recipe printed on it and looks at it, then looks at the mixing bowl.) Oh no! The recipe calls for brown sugar, and I just ran out. (We hear a door bell ring.) What? Who could that be?
EDEN
Mommy?
SARAH
Hush Eden, just wait here for a minute, I’ll be right back. (Sarah walks to stage left, and a young man dressed in a brown UPS uniform hands her a box, then has her sign for it on an electronic pad. Sarah carries the box back to the ‘kitchen’ table.) Okay, I’m back. What could this be?
(Sarah brushes back her brown hair with one hand, and then tears open the brown box. Then she begins pulling its contents out.)
EDEN
Paper!
SARAH
Yeah, ugly brown paper. Let’s see, what can brown do for me? (Sarah pulls out a light-brown packing slip, and looks at it.) Okay, this is a packing slip. It says there should be one package of brown sugar in here!? (Sarah looks through the box again, and pulls out a package of brown sugar.) Oh, thank God. This is a miracle.
EDEN
Sugar!
SARAH
Yeah, sweet just like you. (Sarah reaches over and gently pokes Eden in the tummy, and Eden giggles.) What’d you ask me before?
EDEN
Mommy, why do bananas turn brown?
SARAH
(Sarah reaches and grabs one ripened banana from the table.) Oh, that’s a tough question, I don’t know if I can answer that one.
EDEN
Come on, Mommy, please, please, please can you tell me?
SARAH
Okay, I guess I can tell you. Are you ready?
EDEN
Yes, Mommy.
SARAH
Bananas have a chemical in them; and when bananas are exposed to the air for a few days they begin to turn brown.
EDEN
Okay.
SARAH
The brown isn’t bad, it just means they are ripe.
EDEN
What does ripe mean?
SARAH
Ripe just means the banana is more sweet and ready to eat. The sweeter the banana, the better the banana bread tastes, at least that’s what my mommy taught me.
EDEN
Does Jesus want me to be ripe?
SARAH
That’s such an wonderful thought, honey. I never thought of it that way. Yes, Jesus wants us to be patient, and grow up to be older and sweeter, ready to serve Him.
EDEN
When I grow up, I want to be just like you, Mommy.
SARAH
Awwww… I love you Eden.
EDEN
I love you, too, Mommy. Can I go watch VeggieTales?
SARAH
Yes. (Eden exits stage right. Sarah picks up her cell phone and sends a text to her husband, Pastor Joe.) Joe, I know u r busy serving at the Mission, but I’m writing to tell you what Eden just said. She asked me why do bananas turn brown? I gave her a schoolteacher explanation, but she turned it spiritual and asked me if Jesus wants us to be ripe. I almost started crying, and told her, yes He wants us to be patient, grow up older and sweeter; ready to serve Him. (Sarah stopped and clicked Send.) Joe wrote back: God speaks through His children.
