As an infant, my daughter had no choice but to depend on her mother and father for everything. We provided the sponge baths, nourishment, and diaper changes. And Steph, well, she provided the splashing water, burps and pukes, and the…well, you know. The same video camera captured some of those exciting mishaps and adventures. They seem a bit funnier today than they did during the live performances.
As infants, we depend on our parents, or parent, to provide what we need when we need it. It is at this stage of existence that the miracle of parenthood truly shines a blinding ray of hope for all of mankind to marvel. Wars, famines, natural disasters, and all other tribulations that befall the inhabitants of this planet cannot overshadow the love parents offer their infant children.
God’s love for his creation, both the parent and the infant, is magnified many times over. And we know this because we know He allowed his Son to pay the price for our sin and rebellion. It is hard to fathom allowing anything bad happening to our children, let alone offering our children as a living sacrifice to pay for another person’s crimes. Our omnipotent Lord had such amazing compassion toward his mutinous creation that he did the unthinkable: “For God so loved the world (us) that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16 NIV parenthesis added)
The kind of love God is capable of is so far removed from my comprehension that I have to begin the process of “understanding” at the most precious stage of the human experience. My love for my newborn daughter, Steph, was at a heightened level because without my support and nourishment she would not have survived for very long. God’s desire for relationships and commitments to the souls he has brought into existence is much the same. Without the Lord’s forgiveness, direction, and nourishment, we can never be all that God has planned for us. No matter where we are in our walk with the Lord, there are some issues, some lessons to learn, and some questions that leave us feeling like we are in the infancy (birth) stages of fellowship. Remember, that’s really not such a bad place to be when you know how much your Father loves you.
